It’s true what they say, about how we are better at the things we love to do. This is not to discount the reality that we often have to do what we need to do. However, doing what we need to do comes with a little less passion and ambition than doing what we love.

To truly become a strong performer in any area of our lives; career, athletics, personal hobbies – we need to love it. There’s no way around it. If you don’t have the passion, you won’t want to put in the effort required to do it well.

Let’s think about the work you’ve chosen to do to make a living. Do you love it, or does it pay the bills? Is it something you want to do, or have to do?

Let’s take this a step further. What if you not only did work that you loved, but you stopped thinking about your work as work, or as a job, or as a means to an end? In fact, what if you just stopped thinking about yourself so much?

What I’m suggesting is that we start thinking about how our skills, education, experience, talent and passion can be combined to serve. When we start thinking about our work as a way that we can serve other people, it becomes less “work” and more “vocation”, no matter what our job title is.

You could be a web designer, serving people through creating websites that launch and grow their businesses. Maybe you’re a physician and you serve people through healing their bodies. Perhaps you’re a teacher and you serve through guiding and educating the future.

When we look at our work as service, and we put the focus on others, it changes our approach, and it changes the decisions we make as it relates to the work we choose to do. This is why it’s important to choose work you love, because when we’re serving others, we want to do it well. They deserve it, and so do you.
