It's been a sentimental journey.
Fans of beloved screen legend Doris Day gathered outside her California home to celebrate her 92nd birthday (although her age has been disputed before). Day, standing on the balcony in a white turtleneck and oversized glasses, was visibly moved by a birthday serenade from fans below.
"This is something that is so touching," she told her admirers over the phone, according to Inside Edition. "And I want you all to know that each one of you means so much to me, you really do."
This exchange has become an annual event for the "Pillow Talk" star, as fans similarly commemorated the actress last year on her birthday.
Day has largely withdrawn from the public eye in her later years, trading in cameras and celebrity for a much more important cause: the Doris Day Animal Foundation. In lieu of gifts, she asked fans to donate to the charity, which rescues and rehabilitates animals.
Although she's not "really fond" of birthdays anymore, her publicist told People that she did have one wish.
"Her biggest birthday wish is that every four-legged friend have a warm bed, plenty to eat and lots of love," he said.
Day also shared a never-before-seen photo with the magazine, a snapshot of herself looking happy and healthy with a cute pup on her lap.
Happy birthday, Doris.
