Enjoy A Bird's-Eye View Of This Stunning Greek Island

Drone footage shows why thousands of tourists come to Elafonisos every summer.

Elafonisos is a small island off the southeastern end of the Peloponnese peninsula, part of the department of Laconia. The small town of Neapoli is located to its east.

During ancient times, Elafonisos wasn’t even an island ― it was a peninsula, part of which later became submerged.

The island’s name, which translates to “island of the deer” in Greek, originates from the large population of red deer that existed there in antiquity. A number of shrines dedicated to ancient Greek goddess of hunting, Artemis, could also be found on the island.

The population of Elafonisos numbers only several hundred in the winter, but it multiplies in the summer months, when the island draws thousands of tourists from all around Greece.

In the video by Emilio Takas, above, drone footage captures the white beaches and clear blue water that make Elafonisos so popular with visitors. See it for yourself.
