WASHINGTON ― Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz announced that he and his wife, Cari Tuna, are contributing $20 million to help elect Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

In a post on Medium titled “Compelled to Act,” Moskovitz wrote that he and Tuna will donate $5 million each to the super PACs For Our Future and League of Conservation Voters Victory Fund and make limited contributions to the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Party, MoveOn.org Political Action and Color of Change PAC. They will also contribute to a number of unnamed nonpartisan get-out-the-vote organizations.

The $10 million promised to two super PACs will immediately catapult the duo into the upper echelon of Democratic big money donors in 2016. The couple would be the seventh-largest super PAC donor to groups supporting the Democratic Party.

The reason Moskovitz is compelled to give so much money this year can be explained in two words: Donald Trump.

Even though he and his wife have voted Democrat every election, they think of themselves as “independent thinkers who respect candidates and positions from both sides of the aisle,” he wrote. This election, however, is “a referendum on who we want to be — as individuals, as a nation and as a society.”

For Moskovitz, Trump represents fear, tribalism and intolerance. He would lead the country to turn away from the world as represented by his number one policy priority, Moskovitz wrote ― “the literal building of a wall between us and our neighbor.”

“So, for the first time, we are endorsing a candidate and donating,” he continued. “We hope these efforts make it a little more likely that Secretary Clinton is able to pursue the agenda she’s outlined, and serve as a signal to the Republican Party that by running this kind of campaign — one built on fear and hostility — and supporting this kind of candidate, they compel people to act in response. We are not the only ones being activated so strongly during this election.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
