A little over 12 hours after the announcement of U.S. missile strikes targeting an air field in Syria, public support for the decision is very high, with 60% of Americans responding favorably.

73% of Republicans and 65% of Independents support the military action, launched in the wake of a chemical attack on Syrian civilians earlier this week. Though not equally popular across party lines, the fact that 33% of Democrats supported President Trump’s decision is remarkable in light of the recent political climate.

In line with typical party make-up, support is highest among men, people over the age of 55, whites, and those living in more rural parts of the U.S. Conversely, opposition is higher among women, Millennials, minorities, and urban dwellers.
