Ed Helms On Andy Bernard's 'Office' Promotion

Steve Carell's departure from "The Office" left such a massive void that it took the show's producers months to decide who on the cast could capably fill his shoes. They ultimately chose to give Michael Scott's old job as Regional Manager of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch to Andy Bernard, and as Ed Helms told "The View" (weekdays on ABC), even the actors were kept in the dark about the move until a few weeks before they started shooting began on Season 8.

"It's been tremendous, it's really fun," Bernard told the panel, which included "Community" star Yvette Nicole Brown. "We didn't know who was gonna step into that role until a few weeks before the season started. It's just a testament to the friendship of the whole cast that everyone was kinda like, 'Whoever it is, we'll be psyched!'"

Reflecting on the current season, which has featured several less traditional episodes, like the raucous pool party at Robert California's mansion and half the cast on a month-long work field trip to Florida, Helms said, "I think this year the show has sort of had more of an ensemble celebration feel anyway, so it's just a joy."
