Ed Schultz signed off from his final show in the 8:00 p.m. time slot on Thursday.

Earlier this week, the MSNBC host announced he will be leaving his primetime weekday slot to host the 5-7:00 p.m. hour on Saturdays and Sundays. He told audiences that he wanted to move to weekends, but there have been rumors that the network was trying to replace him. Weekend host Chris Hayes, a protege of Rachel Maddow's who hosts "Up With Chris" on Saturday and Sunday mornings, will take over Schultz's primetime slot.

Speaking of his move to weekend evenings, Schultz said, "We’re going to build those hours to be the best hours in cable." He thanked his wife, Wendy, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in July, for embarking on a new journey with him to build up the weekend hours.

"Just remember one thing, liberals. 5:00 on Sunday afternoon, the biggest brand in liberal talk gets the first wack at the Sunday shows on what's really happening in America," he said. "And I know you're going to tune in and I'm looking forward to it."

Hayes show will debut on April 1.
