W's Fashion Director Says 'Without Diversity, Creativity Remains Stagnant'

There is a short list of black luminaries within the fashion industry and Edward Enninful is definitely on it. As W magazine’s fashion and style director he has helped break barriers and has challenged fashion's diversity problem -- all while producing some of the most stunning editorials.

For that and so much more, Enninful was honored at the 49th annual Frederick Douglass Awards, hosted by the New York Urban League. The event, which took place last Wednesday night, was full of other fashion heavyweights like Diane von Furstenberg, Balmain's Olivier Rousteing,Giambattista Valli and Jourdan Dunn, to name a few. But it was supermodel and Enninful's close friend, Naomi Campbell that was on hand to present Enninful with his award.

While Enninful said he counts himself "lucky" to have worked with fashion rockstars like Vogue's Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, he also told the crowd that luck doesn't fix fashion's inequality when it comes to people of color.

But what if we lived in a world where luck had nothing to do with it, where high-quality education was provided to every student no matter the color of their skin or where they grew up? I can tell you, without diversity, creativity remains stagnant.

Indeed. Congrats, Edward!

Here's a look at a few Instagram snaps from the awesome event...
