Edward R. Murrow Awards: CBS Wins Best Newscast, NBC Takes Five

NBC News won five Edward R. Murrow Awards, but the "CBS Evening News" won for best broadcast, the Radio-Television News Directors Association announced Monday.

The awards, named in honor of news legend Edward R. Murrow, honor excellence in electronic journalism.

NBC News won for overall excellence for "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams." The network also took prizes in Breaking News (for Hurricane Gustav coverage), Continuing Coverage (for Richard Engel's "Tip of the Spear" reports on Afghanistan), and News Series and Writing (both for the "Today" show's "American Story with Bob Dotson" series).

CBS News, which won for best network newscast, also won three awards for "60 Minutes": the Feature: Hard News award for the "60 Minutes" feature on an inmate exonerated by DNA; the Feature Reporting prize for the "60 Minutes" report on musical savant Rex; and the Investigative Reporting prize for the "60 Minutes" feature on toxic e-waste in China.

Other TV awards went to Nickelodeon for Linda Ellerbee's "Coming Home" special, ESPN for "Kick for Nick," CTV News for videography in "Tibetan Horseman," and CNN for its website, CNN.com.
