Tonight’s debate between our two hope-to-be V.P.'s, Tim Kaine and Mike Pence, provided a hint of what a debate can be when facilitated by a strong, confident moderator, such as Elaine Quijano. I applaud her effort and tenacity, especially since neither candidate seemed eager to be managed.

During this first (and only) 90-minute debate, I saw and heard two articulate men of conviction--men of personal faith and public service--passionately advocating for their respective presidential candidates, presenting and explaining each of their party's platform, and communicating differing opinions about how best to address the problems and challenges faced by our nation.

Tonight's performance offered a rare glimpse why this special form of discussion is called a 'debate’—a glimpse I hope both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump also observed.
