If the chance ever came up for Ellen DeGeneres to host President Donald Trump on her talk show, chances are she’d decline. The “Ellen DeGeneres Show” host told NBC’s Matt Lauer this week that she didn’t have much interest in having Trump as a guest.

“Would you like him to come on the show?” Lauer asked, to which DeGeneres replied, “Um, no.”

Asked why, she responded, “Because I’m not going to change his mind.”

“He’s against everything that I stand for,” she added.

While the exchange regarded a theoretical offer, the decision about how talk-show hosts should handle Trump has been ongoing. Last year, NBC’s Seth Meyers said he wouldn’t have Trump on his late-night show either, although he eventually lifted the ban. Jimmy Fallon, also of NBC, faced intense blowback when he hosted Trump for a softball interview two months before the 2016 presidential election.

DeGeneres, who recently celebrated the 20-year anniversary of her public coming out as gay, ended her response with a more general point about respecting the many different views of the people around us.

“We need to look at someone else who looks different than us and believes in something that we don’t believe in and still accept them and still let them have their rights,” she said.
