On a rainy Friday afternoon in Tribeca we caught up with the beautiful Emma Roberts who was in town to promote her favorite fashion app, Snapette, a location-based shopping app that that allows you to virtually browse images of products available in nearby stores. The newly appointed Snapette Fashion Advisor talked to us about her love of all things fashion, her maturing film career and how her aunt Julia has influenced her style.
So tell me a little bit about this fashion app? How did you get involved and why did Snapette?
Emma Roberts: "I love fashion, it's one of my favorite things. When I heard about Snapette it just made sense to be a part of it because I'm one of those people where I'm like, where did you get that? Where do I find that? And Snapette is kind of like Instagram meets Yelp for fashion. Not only can you see all the content but you can figure out where to get it right near you, and that's the best thing because when I'm traveling I see stuff I want and there's nothing worse than hearing 'Oh I don't know where I got it.'"
Have you been interested in fashion and style from a young age, or is it a more recent interest?
ER: "It's one of those things, I was always wanting to dress myself and I was always putting outfits together, or I'd want to go to school in my dress-up high heels and my feather boa and my mom was like, 'Emma, you cannot go to school in that' and I'd be like 'Why?' So for me it's something that's always been an interest of mine for sure."
Over the past few years you've emerged as a style icon for many girls. Who do you look to for inspiration? Do you have any style icons of your own?
ER: "I really love Kate Bosworth, she's been looking better than ever recently. I remember at the Met Ball this year she wore this stunning wine colored lip with this flapper dress, it was amazing. I think she always looks great. As far as brands I think Miu Miu always does inventive things, [they're] always really themed which is really inspiring."
And has your aunt Julia influenced your style at all?
ER: "I mean, I love her looks. I remember I was with her when she was in her fitting for her Oscars dress and I remember being like 'Oh that's such a pretty dress, I love it.' I think she always looks beautiful."
The terrible weather today has me thinking about how to dress for cooler temperatures. Do you have any tips of tricks for looking chic and staying warm?
ER: "Probably a great pair of tights. Wolford tights are the best because they look really good, and they're super warm. I still want to be able to wear cute dresses or skirts -- I have a great cashmere dress I got from Theory a couple of years ago, and I love it, but then my legs are cold so adding tights to it and a great pair of ankle boots can look fall-ready but not too bundled up. Because I hate feeling like I'm wearing a hundred layers."
How about dressing for holiday parties? Do you have any tricks for that, I know it can be a challenge.
ER: "I love the idea of wearing a turtleneck with a really great skirt, like highwaisted or something, because that way it's sexy and warm but still appropriate for winter."
But they're actually subtly sexy.
ER: "Yeah, and I've been seeing a lot of colored cashmere turtlenecks which I never even thought of, but how cute would a red cashmere turtleneck be to wear at Christmas time?"
Perfect! You seem to be prepared for the holiday season, do you have any plans for your Halloween costume this year?
ER: "I'm still trying to figure it out. I am going to a bunch of different parties, so I'll have a bunch of different outfits, but I think one night me and all my friends are going to go as party animals -- just wear animal outfits and be party animals."
That's so fun! Have there been any other great costumes you've done in the past?
ER: "I was Snow White last year which was cute, a last-minute outfit, I was like 'I don't know what else to be.'"
Cute! Now I have to tell you that I just saw "Celeste and Jesse Forever" where you play a spoiled pop star, which has been one of the films where you have segued into more mature roles. Was this a conscious decision, or a natural progression?
ER: "I loved playing that role. I think for me I finally started playing my age. Everyone keeps saying I'm playing more mature, but I'm actually just playing how old I am, and I just happened to have gotten older. But it's fun; I don't really look at roles and say I want to play this age, it's more about the role, for me I would play younger if it were for something great -- it's more about the role and if it's going to be fun and if it's going to be something I want to do."
How did you like working with Rashida Jones?
ER: "Oh my god, I love Rashida Jones. She is one of the smartest people I know and so cool. That movie, even if I wasn't in it, I'd still love it. [When I saw it] I was crying and I was laughing and I walked away feeling really good."
And did you learn anything from working with Rashida?
ER: "What I love about Rashida is she is just herself and that's so admirable especially in this industry -- someone that is so just unapologetically themself. And that's what I love about her. She's just cool."
You seemed to have worked with some great people over your career. What's next for you? Any plans, any films?
ER: "Well I just finished this movie called 'We're The Millers' with Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis that was so much fun because I got to do a real true comedy which I haven't done. It's about this fake family that's put together to smuggle pot across the border, so it's a really funny premise and lots of things go wrong. It was a really fun movie to shoot. That's coming out next summer, along with 'Empire State' which is a film I did with Liam Hemsworth, which is a much darker, smaller movie.
I know we're short on time, but I have to ask you one last question that my friend asked me the other day, if you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
ER: "A silk pajamas set. With my name embroidered on it."
