For any sports fan sentient in the '90s, mentioning the Dallas Cowboys will forever conjure images of Emmitt Smith gashing defenses en route to the NFL all-time rushing record. Smith, along with quarterback Troy Aikman and receiver Michael Irvin, symbolizes the golden era of the franchise that yielded three Super Bowl rings.
Those days are long gone, something Smith readily admits. He stopped by HuffPost Live on Wednesday to talk football and had harsh words for the current Cowboys team and organization.
"There's no identity for the Dallas Cowboys as far as I'm concerned," Smith told host Marc Lamont Hill. "There's no balance there. Are we doing enough to help our beleaguered defense? ... I see us having a struggle this season."
From 1993 to 1999, Smith played with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, who was a backup quarterback for most of his time in uniform. Smith admits his friend hasn't been up to snuff as a head coach thus far.
"8-8 doesn't say so," Smith said of Garrett, who has finished with a .500 record in each of his three full seasons as head coach. "I don't think [owner] Jerry [Jones] has that kind of control. The control has to go with the head coach. He's the one that sets the tempo for the entire organization ... I love Jason Garrett. I played with him. I know he's a smart guy. At the end of the day, though, it's about wins and losses."
