If “Squid Game” taught us anything, it’s that there can only be one winner and so also goes the rules for the Emmy Awards.
The Television Academy narrowed down television’s best in a particularly exceptional year, with “Succession,” “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus” leading the nominations unveiled on Tuesday morning. HBO led the pack with a total of 108 nods, besting longstanding streaming rival Netflix, which received 105.
HBO’s biting corporate family drama landed a towering 25 nods across acting, directing and writing categories, and stands as returning champ at the ceremony in September after sweeping the pandemic-impacted 2020 awards show.
Netflix’s South Korean dystopian thriller also picked up 14 nods, including Outstanding Drama Series, making history as the first non-English series to be nominated for multiple Emmys. The Outsanding Drama Series category is rounded out by returning favorites ― “Better Call Saul,” “Euphoria” and “Stranger Things” ― as well as freshmen series, including Apple TV+’s sci-fi workplace thriller “Severance” and Showtime’s survival drama “Yellowjackets.”
With the number of shows in contention rebounding to new highs following pandemic-induced production shutdowns, voters winnowed the cream from an especially overcrowded 2022 crop, leaving some beloved series out in the cold.
“Station Eleven,” “Yellowstone,” as well as outgoing series “Better Things” “Insecure” and “This Is Us,” which aired final seasons this year, failed to win attention in the major races.
As for comedies, it’s a question of just how much you believe in Apple TV+’s relentlessly optimistic “Ted Lasso.” The Jason Sudeikis-starring series is poised once again to dominate the comedy races, with 20 nominations. Jean Smart is a near-certain lock to be recognized again for her performance in “Hacks,” which was also honored with an Outstanding Comedy Series nod.
Two-time past winner Bill Hader of “Barry” could stand in the way of a repeat trophy for Sudeikis. Both will also face stiff competition from “Only Murders in the Building” stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, as well as from Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) and Nicholas Hoult (“The Great”).
Meanwhile, Quinta Brunson’s breakout “Abbott Elementary” might just save the broadcast sitcom from near oblivion at the awards show after landing multiple nods. The ABC series stars Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams and Brunson also were recognized in the acting races.
But there’s no field more competitive that the overstuffed Limited Series contests.
Odds are that the Television Academy will honor one of a string of starry fictionalized true-crime stories, with “Dopesick,” “The Dropout,” “Inventing Anna” and “Pam & Tommy” nominated for Outstanding Limited Series. Unless, of course, HBO Max’s social satire “White Lotus,” which is also nominated in the category in addition to 19 other nods, can sustain the buzz from its summer debut and bring actors like Jennifer Coolidge, Connie Britton and Murray Bartlett some Emmys attention.
The Emmys nomination announcement ceremony was presented by Melissa Fumero (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and JB Smoove (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), alongside Frank Scherma, the Television Academy chair and CEO.
After Cedric the Entertainer helmed last year’s ceremony, held in person with a limited and vaccinated audience, the Emmys have yet to announce a host for this year’s festivities. Chris Rock and Dwayne Johnson, however, were both reportedly offered the gig, as producers are aiming to recruit A-list talent to emcee the show.
The 74th Emmy Awards will air live Monday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. on NBC and the streaming service Peacock.
