WATCH: Emotional Exchange Between Eric Garner's Stepfather And Protester

"Where we headed for? What's the future for me? What's the future for me? You know what I'm saying, for my child, for my son? What is his future?"

That's what a distressed man asked Eric Garner's stepfather Benjamin Carr on Wednesday night after a grand jury decided not to indict the police officer accused of choking Garner to death. Protesters were gathered in Staten Island, New York, where the 43-year-old man died in August.

The unidentified man told Carr, "What could possibly be done? The message is that it's different for them than for us. Years and years we've been fighting and fighting and nothing has changed...It's wrong! It's wrong!"

Carr comforted the man, who began to weep.

"Let's keep the peace," Carr said. "We all are hurting."

Many high-profile figures, including President Obama, Garner's widow Esaw Garner and New York Mayor Bill De Blasio, have spoken out in reaction to the grand jury vote, which came just days after a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri decided not to indict Darren Wilson over the death of Michael Brown. Protests spread across the nation in the wake of both decisions.
