With a rich tapestry of activities and sizzling hospitality, Guadalajara (Mexico) offers a not-to-be-missed getaway. It’s the homeland of mariachi music, tequila and the jarabe tapatio (Mexican hat dance), but the grandest part of the culture is the bountiful cuisine and abundant Mexican smiles that greet you. Tapatios (as locals are called) open their hearts to showcase their sophisticated and artistic city. If you cherish stunning architecture and unique artisans, you’ll seek walking tours or glimpses of the striking murals of Jose Clemente Orozco, one of the great Mexican muralists.

SABOR
Barriga llena, Corazon contenta! Local gastronomy might include birria (lamb or goat covered in maguey leaves and roasted) served in a tomato broth, or torta ahogada (a pork sandwich bathed in tomato sauce). A favorite drink is the paloma, which combines tequila, lime juice and grapefruit. I recommend you also sample the shrimp quesadillas with nopal (cactus) and cream of cilantro soups typical of the region. Nouvelle Mexican cuisine in a fusion characterizes the area.

Following is just part of my Travel Diary:

DAY ONE - ART AND ARCHITECTURE: Don’t miss a trip to the Basilica de la Virgen de Zapopan. This 18th century church is the heart and religious center of Guadalajara. An expansive promenade several blocks long leads to a large open plaza and the basilica. The Virgen is much admired and is the object of many pilgrimages. While the architecture is primarily baroque, there are a few classical additions. Well worth the stop is the store and museum saluting the Huichol Indians nearby. Be sure to tour the Museo de la Cuidad, a former convent chronicling Guadalajara’s past. Small but charming this is a déjà vu step back in time.

Another artistic stop is at the Museo Pantaleon Pandura, a sizzling collection of ceramic works from around Mexico. In downtown Guadalajara, stroll through the Plaza Liberacion to the Plaza Tapatia, and to the Plaza de Armas and the nearby Palacio del Gobierno. The robust cornucopia of art and architecture offers a sensory extravaganza you’ll long treasure. Don’t miss the Gothic crown jewel, Templo Expiatorio. This is a city to enjoy on foot. Within 5 blocks, you’ll discover at least 10 architectural styles.

I cherished the fresh end of the day with a scenic and totally relaxing panoramic boat ride at Chapala, Mexico’s largest lake, dotted with colorful fishing boats. Your stress will melt away as you bond with Mother Nature.

DAY TWO - TLAQUEPAQUE: Off the beaten path galleries and creative artisans await in the nearby village of Tlaquepaque. Known for ceramics and pottery, this neighborhood is also a folkloric dream of days gone by.

DAY THREE - ARCHEOLOGY AND ANTIQUITIES: If you’re a history buff like I am, do not miss an opportunity to tour the ruins of Guachimontones. Located near the town of Teuchitian, these circular pyramids are a UNESCO World Heritage site and are one of the most recently unearthed archeological sites in Mexico (1980’s). The pyramids are representative of the Teuchitian tradition, a pre-Columbian society that arose between 200BC and 200AD. A trip to the nearby town of Teuchitian is well worth your time, for a change of pace and a slower lifestyle with a small but adequate museum to enhance the adventure. You can also enjoy some authentic cuisine prepared in the pre-Hispanic method in a nearby village.

DAY FOUR - TEQUILA: Try to manage a side trip to the quaint town of Tequila, which you can utilize in a day trip by tour companies or taxis. You can imbibe in a fun-filled tequila tasting and some fascinating distillery tours of such brands as Sauza or Jose Cuervo. A lunch at Mundo Cuervo adds some unique pairings. Salud!

The diversity of Guadalajara lingers and has a haunting pull at my heartstrings. I am already planning a return visit!
