Alex Bilmes, Esquire UK Editor: We Treat Women Like Cars

GROSS: Editor's Incredibly Sexist Comments

What a charmer!

Seriously, Alex Bilmes, the editor of Esquire UK, must have fancied himself some sort of lovable cad when he announced--while speaking at a panel about feminism in the media, no less--that his magazine treats women about the same as they do cars.

"The women we feature in the magazine are ornamental," he said, according to the Guardian. "I could lie to you if you want and say we are interested in their brains as well. We are not. They are objectified ... [Esquire] provide pictures of girls in the same way we provide pictures of cool cars. It is ornamental. Women's magazines do the same thing." In case any of the women in the audience were wondering, he assured them that men definitely see women as "3-D" in real life, so ... there's that.

Points for honesty, we suppose. We also probably didn't really need Bilmes to spell out Esquire's editorial strategy.

Unfortunately for Bilmes, all of the "ornaments" in the crowd didn't seem too enamored with his statements. "We have sharp objects," one woman said.
