Etsy Shop Tour: The Story Behind Designer Ursula Dean Of Modaspia

Confessions Of A Design Mom: "I Wake Up At 4:30 Every Morning"

Ursula Dean is the designer behind the Etsy shop Modaspia, and a mother of two. She runs her business with her husband out of a small studio in the town of Placerville, just northeast of the Bay Area in California.

Being a self-employed working mom, Dean's daily schedule can be a bit jam-packed. She gets up before dawn to get started on work and takes her kids to school when the sun comes up. Then she heads back to her studio and has six hours to get as much designing, cutting, and sewing done before her children come home. And, while Dean tries to give her kids her full attention as much as possible, sometimes work does intersect with the home life. "Oftentimes there's more work to be done so I'll bring the kids down to the studio," explains Dean.

However, for Dean and her kids, it's also those moments when they're together in her work studio that bring them closer together. "I think one thing that's very very clear to both my kids is that I love what I'm doing," she says, later adding, "I like to think that once they're grown they would feel like they could do whatever they wanted as long as they loved it."
