'Evolve Out' Of Menopause: Do Women Actually Want That?

Do Women Actually Want To 'Evolve Out' Of Menopause?

Last month a scientist made a claim that got many women's attention.

"The mood of scientists working on this and looking to the future is we will either technologically or scientifically evolve out of the menopause," said Dr. Aarathi Prasad at Hay Festival, a multidisciplinary studies event in England.

A 2012 study suggested that menopause evolved to limit competition between older women and daughters-in-law. According to the Telegraph, Prasad went on to say there were no health benefits to women experiencing menopause, the end of a woman's menstruation and fertile years which usually occurs in your 40s and 50s:

"If you're looking at a future where women are going to live to 100, that's half your life when the rest of your body functions perfectly well and your ovaries don't. And it's not just reproduction. The menopause brings an increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. What we think is normal is not normal for nature. If it is something not in all mammals, is it something necessary or beneficial for us? I do not see any benefits."

We asked our Facebook Huff/Post50 fans what they thought about the possibility of women evolving out of going through menopause, and the conversation was robust to say the least.

"if it meant not having to go through the hormonal changes, hot flashes, etc. I might not mind," wrote Tina Reyes Galie. Lori A Doyle agreed: "Only reason to evolve out of menopause is to get rid of the nasty symptoms!"

"I would say, 'No, thanks,'" responded LisaCee Cox. "Women don't need to have children late in life, we have health concerns and our own needs to get around to then."

One of the most popular answers came from Anna Gregerson: "Being fertile is just one temporary aspect of my life... of my being. It never defined me... and still does not. No matter how healthy and fit, no way I would ever want to be dealing with teething, tantrums and PTA past about age 35."
