A recently surfaced video from 2011 shows a Virginia tea party politician saying that God will not bless the U.S. armed forces if military chaplains are allowed to perform same-sex marriage.
"The military is a repository of traditional values," proclaimed E.W. Jackson at the 2011 Virginia Family Foundation summit. Jackson, a Christian minister, is currently the Republican nominee for Virginia lieutenant governor.
"Now we're being told there is a new order of the day," Jackson trumpets in the video, referring to the prospect of military chaplains being permitted to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies. (While the Pentagon allows military chaplains to participate in or officiate gay weddings, it does not force them to, leaving the decision up to the chaplains themselves and to the religious groups to which they belong.)
"How in the world can we expect our military to be blessed by the hand of Almighty God if we allow our military to become the equivalent of Sodom and Gomorrah?" he goes on to say.
Jackson, who is also a lawyer and a former marine, has in the past said that God opposes gay marriage and that there is a connection between homosexuality and pedophilia.
Jackson is running on the Republican ticket with Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli, who once said homosexuality is "intrinsically wrong."
The state governor's race pits Jackson and Cuccinelli against influential fundraiser and former Democratic Party Chairman Terry McAuliff, who has been endorsed by the Clintons and is leading Cuccinelli in the polls.
