BitTorrent Users Sued For Illegally Downloading 'The Expendables': 23,000 Face Fines

23,000 Sued For Illegally Downloading The Same Film

In what could be the largest illegal downloading case in U.S. history, approximately 23,000 BitTorrent users are expected to receive notice this week that they are being sued for illegally downloading the action film "The Expendables."

According to Wired, a federal judge has approved the U.S. Copyright Group's request to subpoena Internet service providers to recover the identities of individuals who downloaded the film.

Each defendant, listed as John Does 1 through 23,000, faces a maximum $150,000 per offense, but settlements typically fall into the $3,000 range.

This marks the second case filed by production company Nu Image against Web users who allegedly pirated copies of "The Expendables."

Altogether, over 140,000 BitTorrent users in the United States currently face lawsuits for illegally downloading files, mostly B-list films and pornography.

"The Expendables" is directed by Sylvester Stallone and features an ensemble cast of Stallone along with Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, and Gary Daniels as well as cameos by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Here's the trailer, just in case you are now considering renting the film.
