Experts Urge Schools To Teach Digital Citizenship

Following of a rash of teen deaths related to cyberbullying, experts on youth and the Internet say that schools aren't doing enough to teach students about proper online behaviors, NPR reports.

Without mentoring, education and stern consequences, otherwise "good" kids can easily turn to the Internet and perform cruel behaviors without understanding potential repercussions. Researchers say that schools haven't kept up with the digital times.

Jim Steyer, founder and CEO of Commonsense Media told NPR, "schools were late to the party":

"I think that the technological revolution has in some cases outpaced schools' ability to keep track of it," he says.

Lawmakers in New Jersey are also taking action, introducing legislation that would give harsher penalties to cyberbullies.
