A lawmaker's claims that the British government's decision to legalize gay marriage was the cause of recent storms and flooding across the country has prompted a hilarious Facebook campaign in response.
Councillor David Silvester also claimed that being gay was a "spiritual disease" and has subsequently been banned from his political party. His comments that gay marriage caused the nation to be “beset by storms” prompted activists to create the group "Get 'It's Raining Men' To Number 1," in reference to the popular 80s hit by The Weather Girls.
"For decades now, this song has been used as a gay anthem, we thought it fit all the better based on UKIP councillor's comments regarding storms and floods being caused by LGBT people and gay marriage," the group noted on its Facebook page. "Let's get 'It's Raining Men' to number one to show the power and community of gay people pulling together is stronger than his idiotic views of us, as well as also celebrating the new laws being passed on equal marriage in the UK."
This isn't the first time members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community have been blamed for naturally occurring weather phenomenon. In October 2012, Rabbi Noson Leiter blamed New York's gay marriage law for the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Additionally, the New Orleans annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) festival received the blame for Hurricane Issac, and the Westboro Baptist Church famously placed responsibility for the Oklahoma tornado last year on veteran NBA player Jason Collins' coming out.
