BEHOLD Facebook's New Office: The Eames Chairs, The Bistro And The Lawsuit

The battle for the Bay Area's sweetest new office space continues.

Though AirBnb came in strong with a PanAm homage in the foyer and an antelope mount in the men's room, Facebook is giving the startup a run for its money with its retro new Menlo Park digs.

The company moved into the new office space at the old Sun Microsystems building in December, and employees are reportedly making themselves right at home. Between the bistro-style complimentary cafeteria and employee gym, we can't blame them. And Facebook is certainly winning the war for most Eames (inspired?) furniture.

But perhaps the building's most unique aspect is the "open source" floorplan. Instead of cubicles and walled-in offices, Facebook is reportedly outfitted with lots of work "spaces," including cozy couches, tables and conference rooms tucked throughout the building, offering employees plenty of creative space with few of the traditional workspace restrictions. Larry Magid of the Mercury News went so far as to suggest that Facebook was reinventing the office.

Of course, what kind of startup success story would Facebook be without a pesky lawsuit from the neighbors? On Thursday, the neighboring City of East Palo Alto (with whom Facebook shares a border) will decide whether to sue over the company's expansion plans and traffic impact. (Can't the economically disadvantaged residents of East Palo Alto just find somewhere else to live? Mark needs his gym!)
