Viral Facebook Post Reminds Dudes Not Every Woman Wants To Talk To Them

"Leave her alone. Let her read her book. Tell your friends."

One person on Facebook has a message for men who don't understand that a woman's existence in public is not an invitation for male attention.

"Just leave her alone," Ivan Coyote, a transgender activist, wrote in a status on Tuesday.

"She is wearing her headphones AND reading her book at the bus stop. What part of that says 'I want to talk to you?' She's not dressed up for you. She's on her way home from work after a long day of dealing with assholes that look a lot like you. She doesn't want to smile. She knows she looks good."

Coyote's post struck a chord with his followers -- it's reached more than 33,000 likes and 10,000 shares since it was published on Tuesday.

That's because women are used to receiving unwanted attention from men in any given space -- on the street, on public transit, and online. New research found that as much as 76 percent of women under 30 have faced harassment online, according to The Guardian.

So when in doubt, guys of public spaces, just follow Coyote's advice: "Just leave her alone."
