'Facing Fear' Subjects, Former Neo-Nazi And Gay Attack Victim, On Their Unique Relationship

The subjects of the controversial new documentary " Facing Fear," a former neo-Nazi and the man he gay-bashed in 1980, spoke candidly about their experience in a Nov. 15 HuffPost Live appearance.

The victim, Matthew Boger, was just 14 years old and homeless when he was attacked by Timothy Zaal and a number of other men in 1980.

"Anybody who got into our way during those days was the perceived enemy," Zaal recalled of the incident. At the time, he noted, physical violence "gave me a buzz, it made me feel like I had power, I had control...which in my own personal life, especially in my home life, I didn't have."

Astonishingly, in the 33 years that have passed since the attack, Boger and Zaal have assumed a cordial "brother"-like relationship.

Although Boger says the film examines the extent of his relationship with Zaal, he nonetheless added, "Tim is more a familial friend...it is very clear at the end in what way I value his friendship. We're there for each other in the moment that we need to be there for each other."
