Faith After Rape: The Toll Of Sexual Assault On The Body, Mind And Spirit (An All Together Podcast)

How can God let such a horrible thing happen?

This episode of All Together includes a first person account of sexual assault and may be difficult or inappropriate for some listeners.

The violent crime of rape not only harms the body and the mind, it can devastate the spirit. Questions such as how God could let such a horrible thing happen can shake the foundations of a rape survivor's religious beliefs. Faith can be another casualty of the crime of sexual assault.

This week, All Together host Paul Raushenbush speaks with the Rev. Dr. Lucy A. Forster-Smith, who is Sedgwick Chaplain to the University and Senior Minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard University. Her latest book is called Crossing Thresholds: The Making and Remaking of a College Chaplain, in which she details the devastating effect of her own experience of sexual assault.

All Together is dedicated to exploring ethics, religion and spiritual practice in daily life and is produced by Katelyn Bogucki and edited by Nick Offenberg. You can download All Together on iTunes, or Stitcher.

If you need help, call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider in your area.
