30 Days Of LGBT Holiday Giving: Give A Gift To The Family Acceptance Project

Note: This holiday season, in lieu of a traditional holiday gift guide, we'll be featuring a different LGBT organization each day for our "30 Days Of LGBT Giving." Check back tomorrow for a look at another incredible group that's working tirelessly on behalf of the LGBT community.

There's perhaps no more difficult act an LGBT person can do than come out -- especially to parents and family members. That's what the Family Acceptance Project focuses on. While there's an increasing amount of evidence and awareness of the risks and challenges queer youth face, the project, which is directed at the Marian Wright Edelman Institute at San Francisco State University, aims to get a clearer picture of the strength and resiliency of LGBT youth and how a family's acceptance and support correlates to a child's health and well-being.

Since the project's inception in 2002, the initiative not only studies families' reactions and adjustment to a member's LGBT identity, but also provides educational materials for service providers who deal with LGBT clients and their families and for strengthening the families themselves, among other project goals.
