8 Practical Beauty Hacks We Learned From The Runway

Fashion Week, whether it's New York or Milan, always brings out the best beauty looks that run the gamut from beautiful to outrageous. As one might expect, it's rare to see beauty runway trends that are realistic for everyday wear.

Among all of the designers involved with New York Fashion Week earlier this month, there were a select few who showcased beauty looks that could be translated from the runways to the real world. Proenza Schouler and Rodarte featured soft, loose waves that were created quite simply, while Creatures of the Wind showed elegant manicures that are at once great for the office and effortlessly chic for a night on the town.

For a better-looking manicure, shape your nails according to your cuticle. For instance, if your cuticle naturally curves upward, a round-shaped nail might be the way to go so that your nail will be tailored to its natural shape.

When creating a French twist, make sure to properly place bobby pins in two key area: at the top and the bottom of the bun. At the top of the twist, secure a bobby pin facing downward so the pin’s openings are pointed towards the floor. For the base of the twist, place a bobby pin in with the prongs facing upwards, so the opening of the pin is facing the sky. The pins will then create a support system within the twist.

To create a natural flush, apply a bit of liquid lipstick to your fingers. Add a thin layer to your lips to create a stain, and dap the remaining product onto your cheeks.

Use your fingers as a comb when blow drying or styling hair for smoother, more natural-looking waves. This method was also used backstage at Proenza Schouler and Creatures Of Comfort.

To prepare hair for wearing a wig, section the hair into circular thirds, tying the center third (at the crown) into a tight ponytail and clip to one side. Wrap the middle section tightly around the head, using firm-hold hairspray to keep everything in place. Repeat with the top section so the hair forms a "skull cap," reducing the bulk of the hair. Take the bottom third section of hair and spray liberally with hairspray. Pull it tightly over the rest of the hair into a high ponytail and fold the ends so that it lies flat to the head.

To avoid a metallic matte nail polish looking too dull and heavy, mix in one or two drops of a shiny metal nail color to maintain the shimmering effect.

To set strands in place, spray the top of the hair with a light-hold hairspray then cover the head with a mesh scarf, pulling down to create tension and ensure the hair sits flat to the head. Apply more hairspray through the mesh and then gently dry with a hair dryer, using a diffuser to prevent disturbing the surface of the hair. Once dry, remove the scarf and you’re runway ready.
