Fat Smitty's Restaurant Donates Over 10,000 Dollar Bills Collected On Its Walls

The tradition started when a traveling salesman tacked a single dollar bill with his name on it to the wall of Fat Smitty's restaurant in Discovery Bay, Wash.

Twenty-seven years later, Carl "Fat Smitty" Schmidt and his nephew and new manager Casey Carson have taken down $10,316 in $1 bills from the walls and ceiling of the restaurant, Peninsula Daily News reports.

They've decided to donate the majority to Boy Scouts Camp Parsons kitchen in Brinnon, Wash., and $3,000 to St. Jude's Children's Research Center in Memphis, Tenn.

The restaurant enlisted help from local Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops, who Schmidt said often stopped at his restaurant after camping trips, taking each dollar down one by one, the Daily Mail reports.

But after redecorating the restaurant finishes in March, Carson hopes customers will begin to tack their dollar bills on the walls once again, he told KitsapSun.com.

"Hopefully, because people know the money is going for charity, it will go up even faster in the future," he said.
