Fatal Shooting On I-95 In Oakland Park Shuts Down Highway For Four Hours (VIDEO)

OAKLAND PARK -- Southbound traffic on Interstate 95 came to a standstill for about four hours Sunday morning as police investigated a fatal shooting on the highway.

A man was found dead inside a silver Buick on the southbound entrance ramp to I-95 at Commercial Boulevard, said Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella.

Broward Sheriff's Deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to reports that shots were fired on I-95 about 6:30 a.m., said Moschella.

Three lanes of traffic opened about 10:45 a.m. The southbound ramp to I-95 opened around noon, said Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Wysocky.

After shots were fired, the car hit a guardrail and then caught fire, Moschella said. The driver apparently died of the gunshot wounds, Moschella said.

"BSO deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue worked to extinguish that fire. Unfortunately, the man in the car who had been shot was deceased on scene," said Moschella.

The Sheriff's Office had not identified the driver Sunday. As of Sunday afternoon, the agency did not have any suspects.

The highway fatality would have created more of a traffic jam if it had taken place Monday morning, said Wysocky.

"It would have been rush hour traffic; that's a big difference," he said.

Officers were also investigating an incident at a nearby Waffle House, but it was unclear Sunday if that was related to the shooting, said Moschella. Crime scene tape surrounded the Waffle House, at 4840 Powerline Road, on Sunday morning.

"We are trying to figure out what started the shooting," Moschella said. "Investigators are trying to put the pieces together."

Anyone with information about the I-95 shooting should contact Broward Sheriff's Det. Brian Tutler at 954-321-4281 or report anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at 954-493-8477 or at Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
