There are a lot of reasons why I look forward to February. For one thing, my birthday is on the 3rd, but February is also the shortest month of the year. For those who love warm weather, that means summer is getting closer. For those who love winter, February means enjoy the polar vortex, snow and ice.

To liven up every month -- and give a little spice to life itself -- there are red-letter days to celebrate. It's always a thrill to kick off Feb. 1 with "National Ice Cream For Breakfast Day." Go nuts and throw a scoop of Rocky Road into your bowl of cereal. Feel no guilt with a double-scoop. Add rainbow sprinkles... who cares? (Body-conscious readers, relax. It's only the first week of February. You have 4.5 more months to indulge before bathing suit season.)

On Feb. 7, it's "Wave All Your Fingers At Your Neighbor Day." Don't get smart and wave the wrong finger. On this holiday wave all of your fingers... as in one hearty "Howdy!" to the folks next door.

On Feb. 11, it's "Get Out Your Guitar Day." What if you don't have a guitar? Likely someone next door does... and by the time you are finished with "Wave All Your Fingers At Your Neighbor Day," you are likely the very best of friends with your neighbors. (Repair any popped strings before returning the guitar, lest all the goodwill built up on "Wave All Your Fingers At Your Neighbor Day" will have been for naught.)

No time to catch your breath! Two days later it's "Get a Different Name Day" on Feb. 13. And who says 13 is an unlucky number? On this day, you can try your luck with any name. What would it be like to be "Airlia" (Greek for "Ethereal")? Or "Brigham" (Scottish for "Dweller by the Bridge." Actually, if you're from New Jersey, don't call attention to yourself at the moment). "Zalika" is Swahili for "Born to Royalty," and heck, you can even be me for the day! ("Bonni" is Latin for "Fair, Lovely.") Guys, here is your opportunity to pronounce yourself "King" for the day. We now crown you "Xerxes." Go for it!

Feb. 14 is Valentine's Day, of course. Don't forget to show your abiding love and devotion now and always.

You've got four days to recover from all the affection before "Cow Milked While Flying In An Airplane Day" on Feb. 18. This marks the 84th anniversary of Elm Farm Ollie to be, not only the first cow to fly, but also the first cow milked in flight. "What did they do with the milk" you may ask? It was sealed in paper cartons and parachuted down to gawking spectators at the International Air Exposition in St. Louis. Do we find this funny... or plain gross? It was 1931. Blame it on the daring spirit of early aeronautics.

Don't cry over spilt milk because you'll need your energy for "Northern Hemisphere Hoodie Hoo Day" on Feb. 20. When the clock strikes noon, go outside, wave your hands over your head and chant, "Hoodie Hoo!" According to HolidayInsights.com, "[Hoodie Hoo Day] is a day to chase away winter blahs and welcome spring."

And finally... get ready for "Inconvenience Yourself Day" on Feb. 26. Try to put someone else before you today. "Inconvenience" yourself by returning a long overdue phone call, writing (not emailing) a thank you note, or waiting to hold open a door for an elder. Feel free to enact some other/any random act of kindness. You've got 24 hours to prove yourself a better person.

On Feb. 28, take a selfie. Smirk or smile as you post your pride. You have officially survived February, one of the bleakest months of the year. Best news of all? The first day of March is the meteorological beginning of spring. Rejoice in the thought of melting snow, finally seeing the earth and the upcoming brouhaha of March Madness.
