Next week, hundreds of liberty-minded college students will descend on Washington, D.C. for the 8th Annual Young Americans for Liberty Convention (YALCON). This is an invite-only event, which seeks to groom and develop the next great leaders within the liberty movement encouraging them to #BeTheNext principled leader.
YAL is the largest, most active, and fastest-growing pro-liberty organization on America’s college campuses. With more than 700 YAL chapters and 250,000 youth activists nationwide, YAL seeks to identify, educate, train, and mobilize young people committed to our founding principles, respect for the Constitution, individual rights, and freedom.
In order for the ideas of liberty to continue to expand, we must inspire more millennials to step up and make a difference. At YAL, we believe making a difference could mean anything from running for office to starting a non-profit organization. It could mean writing and analyzing policy, assisting the movement through the private sector, or becoming the next great libertarian thinker. Whichever path you take, we are challenging our leaders to devote themselves to our cause.
Millennials are more likely than any age group to identify as independents. Why? Because we recognize that the two party system is a system that benefits the political insiders. We can detect falseness and hypocrisy from miles away, and we feel alienated from the current political process.
Instead of looking for a party puppet, we want leaders who are willing to question the status quo—leaders willing to govern and speak based on facts and convictions. We want our country’s leaders to focus on liberty-minded principles as established by our Constitution.
Young Americans—conservative, liberal, libertarian, independent—are as fed up with big government as their parents and grandparents. We need a different kind of politician that speaks to a new generation’s specific interests and concerns.
At YALCON, we want to address these principles and build a new majority that might finally turn this country around. As Senator Rand Paul said, “Young Americans for Liberty is the most important youth organization in the country. They are our best chance at winning the hearts and minds of the next generation.”
In the age of polarization, YAL has shattered the partisan mold. We are bringing hundreds of our best activists together for top-notch training. These pro-liberty activists get to meet the modern day heros of our movement― heros such as Reps. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) and Justin Amash (R-Mich.), Judge Andrew Napolitano, and Cato’s David Boaz. In representing over 300 chapters across the nation, YALCON illustrates the strength of the pro-liberty movement. These young activists will be the leaders of tomorrow.
YAL offers a fresh alternative to the status quo. The future of our nation must rely on liberty in both the economic and personal sphere. We cannot continue to drift away from our founding principles. At YALCON, we will focus on a new path forward that is rooted in the classical ideas of individual liberty.
I’m calling on all young Americans to step up and #BeTheNext principled leader. America needs you now more than ever.
