Fern Lake Fire In Rocky Mountain National Park Expands To Nearly 800 Acres Due To Strong Winds, Heat

Fern Lake Fire Expands In Strong Winds, Heat

The Fern Lake Fire burning in Rocky Mountain National Park expanded to 792 acres on Monday after days of strong winds and higher temperatures increased the fire's activity.

The Associated Press reports that firefighters are monitoring the fire, but not directly attacking it due to the steep and rugged terrain that the fire burns on. However, Inciweb reports that firefighters are watching the fire closely and have successfully established indirect contingency lines on the north and east sides of the fire.

Fueled by high levels of down and dead beetle kill trees, the Fern Lake Fire's cause is still under investigation.

The fire is expected to continue to burn until a heavy snow fall extinguishes it, The Denver Post reports.

A chance of snow is forecast for later in the week.
