A massive showcase of queer cinema from over the decades is underway in New York City -- and you only gave a few days left to catch it.
"An Early Clue to the New Direction, Queer Cinema Before Stonewall" has run at the Film Society of Lincoln Center since April 22, and will continue to showcase the series' 48 films until May 1. Among the films being screened in this incredible lineup of classic queer cinema are works from Minnelli, Hitchcock, Bergman, Cukor, Shirley Clarke, Dreyer, Huston, Warhol and more.
"The narrative of early queer cinema has long fascinated me -- in a sense I've been researching this program for my entire adult life," series programer Thomas Beard told The Huffington Post. "And while the subject has been considered by many great writers and scholars, from Judith Mayne and Parker Tyler to Richard Dyer and Patricia White, there's still much work to be done. It’s my hope that, by defining queer cinema elastically, surprising correspondences will emerge between worlds of moviemaking which are usually understood in contradistinction: studio productions and the underground, the grindhouse and the arthouse. So the ultimate goal of the program is to reveal the terrain of early queer cinema as far vaster and more varied than many might think."
