James Earl Ray is most well known for the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a career criminal, and he participated in two prison breaks; one before the assassination and a joint escape afterward. To prevent future escapes, he was asked while in prison to draw a map of his escape method. It was this curious historical artifact that made its way onto the show "Final Offer" (Thu., 10 p.m. ET on Discovery).
A history teacher had bought the map for $2,500 and was now looking to double his money. But the buyer was more interested in seeing that the map make its way to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, if they would want it.
The buyer even played on the profession of the seller in hopes of getting him to budge on that firm $5,000 offer. "Really, you're a history teacher and you don't want it to go to the right place?" he pleaded. "Come on, man!"
Finally, the teacher acquiesced and they came to an agreement of $4,500. He still got his tidy profit, but maybe the historic artifact will find its way to an appropriate facility.
