Did you know that if you smile; even if you don’t feel like smiling, your mood gets an automatic boost?

If your motivation has disappeared, you are not alone. This week is the week you are most likely to give up on New Year’s Resolution, according to studies, and stop working towards the 2017 you’ve dreamed of. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. If you’re determined to find your Feminine Fortune and make this the best year yet, you can motivate yourself again and keep it going.

The most important thing to remember is that how you approach something is far more important than the actual experience. The mind is a complex place, but how it interprets events is quite simple. Your brain uses the framework you set yourself, so whether you interpret an experience as positive or negative is largely down to your state of mind and mood. A positive state of mind really is enough to motivate you towards success, whereas a negative one can hold you back.

So how do you ensure that you are as motivated as possible? Mood is affected by two main things - your energy and your temperament.

Start with your body. Eating well and exercising are an excellent start; as your state of mind automatically improves when you look after yourself. Next comes breathing and meditation. Taking time to reflect each morning does wonders for renewing passion. The School of Feminine Fortune includes a daily meditation for this very reason! Focus on your breathing often, and build time for meditation into your day. All of these things will help you to build positive energy.

Next, your temperament. We all know someone who seems to radiate positivity and happiness. They smile and laugh a lot, and seem genuinely optimistic and successful. Their success is linked to that passion and happiness - being happy and optimistic makes you predisposed to positively view events and experiences, which means you’re more likely to have a positive experience. Cultivating a positive mental attitude can seem difficult, but is definitely worth the time.

What if you need motivation right now? Follow these five easy steps:

  • Ensure your goals are specific. “Learn to run” or “Lose weight” are goals, but they are not specific enough. “Run a 10k marathon” or “Lose 20lbs” are much clearer, which makes them easier to achieve.
  • Break down your big goals into smaller ones. This will make them feel more manageable, and less overwhelming. For example, you might set a goal to run 2km, or to lose 2lbs.
  • Celebrate achievements. Whether it’s a big goal win or a smaller task, reward your achievement with something meaningful. For example, you could get a new running outfit, or buy something you’ve wanted for a long time. Some people find financial penalties for not following tasks (such as skipping a run) works better, but be careful not to demotivate yourself!
  • Find time to meditate every day. It may be the first thing you do, or you might be able to fit it into a coffee break or your afternoon. Pick a time that suits your schedule, and make a standing appointment to meditate every day. You will soon feel the difference it makes!
  • Find support. Whether it’s 1-to-1 or a supportive group, a neutral perspective on your goals and progress can be invaluable. Not only will your coach help you identify strengths and weaknesses and keep you on track for results, but they can also help you to identify where you are self-sabotaging.

What could you do if you had unlimited motivation? Take the first step towards a happier mind and meeting all your goals today.
