Florida Health Care Amendment Against Obamacare Fails

Florida Voters Reject Anti-Obamacare Amendment

Florida voters rejected a symbolic amendment against President Barack Obama's signature health care reform law on Tuesday.

The measure, which would have added language to the state's constitution banning Obamacare's government mandates for obtaining health insurance, fell short of the 60 percent approval needed for passage. A total of 48 percent supported the proposal, while 52 percent disapproved.

The Associated Press reports:

Amendment 1 wouldn't have made a difference even if it passed, as the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the federal law.

Republicans pushed the amendment through the GOP-controlled Legislature saying that approval still would have sent a strong political message against what they derisively call "Obamacare."

A number of other proposed amendments also fell short of passage on Tuesday in Florida, including one that would have curtailed abortion rights.
