A Florida man was shot and killed on Saturday night in an ill-fated attempt to test his supposedly bulletproof vest, police said.

Joaquin Mendez, 23, donned the vest and “wondered aloud whether it still worked,” according to a police report cited by WESH, the NBC station in Orlando.

“Let’s see,” replied his cousin, 24-year-old Alexandro Garibaldi, who then allegedly fired the fatal shot.

Garibaldi initially told police he heard a gunshot and found his cousin dead, Tampa NBC station WFLA reported. However, a witness told police about the incident. Officers then found the not-so-bulletproof vest inside the home.

Garibaldi was held on charges of manslaughter with a weapon and a felon in possession of a firearm, records from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office noted.
