Florida Southern College is building new dorms inspired by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright ... for cats.
While they won't exactly be dormitories per se, FSC plans to build six new structures, each 5 feet high and 3 feet wide, to serve as shelters for the feral cats that populate the college's campus, the Lakeland Ledger reports. The Alpha Chi Omega sorority will be in charge of supplying food for what FSC is calling "cat cafes."
An estimated 100 feral cats live on the FSC campus, about the same as the number living at the University of Florida, which has had its own trouble figuring out what to do about the stray critters.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Florida will assist FSC's project, according to The Southern, the campus newspaper. The cat cafes will in part help the SPCA trap the felines and spay or neuter and vaccinate them, in an attempt to reduce the area's feral cat population.
FSC and the SPCA's "trap-neuter-return" approach follows the precedent set by schools like Texas A&M University and North Carolina State University. The idea is that once enough cats have been spayed or neutered and no longer reproduce, the cat population will stabilize and eventually decline.
Giving the cat cafes Wright-inspired designs will help the shelters fit in with the rest of the FSC campus, which boasts an "unrivaled collection" of the "largest concentration of Wright designed structures anywhere in the world."
