Food Memories: What Was The First Thing You Remember Eating?

From cotton candy to 'duck soup,' the first tastes we remember never cease to amaze.

When we talk to people about the comfort food they love as adults, the conversation almost always returns to the things they loved as a child. Our food memories shape our paths as eaters further into the future than any of us really expect, and none more than that first taste.

The first thing I ever remember eating was cotton candy. I was two, maybe three, and as a special treat, my parents let me eat a cloud of spun sugar that was easily the size of my own head. The things I remember about this are strange. I was wearing overalls. It was outside (maybe at the zoo?). The cotton candy was pink-flavored, some chemist's idea of cherry or berry or whatever. The way the sugar disappeared in my mouth as I ate it confused and delighted me. This also informed my misconception of how much food I can actually fit into my body, a challenge I enjoy struggling with to this day.

Any time you ask someone to tell you about their first food memory, you get two great things: 1) food talk, which is really our bread and butter and 2) a story about who they are and where they came from. Because the great thing about food memories is that they root us in a time and place, tell a story and make us all hungry. We asked you guys to tell us about your first food memories and you really, really did not disappoint.
