This Friday, Nov. 1, America will learn the latest monthly jobs report news, which will not be good due to the Republican-caused government shutdown.
This Friday, the poorest Americans will learn that their hunger will worsen because their food stamps will be cut unless Congress and the president act.
In short, while the jobless number will remain cruel, or become even more cruel on Friday, and the need to help the jobless and hungry will rise, the help for the hungry will be cut. The Hill and Huffington Post have done excellent work reporting on what is being called the "food stamp cliff," with more of the poor and hungry falling off the cliff because of the politicians.
This is a crime. This is an outrage. This is a scandal. This is a moral indecency.
Pope Francis and a long list of leaders of great religions have called on us to do more to help the poorest of the poor and the hungriest of the hungry. At least 80 percent of the people who will be hurt by the food stamp cuts that will be imposed Nov. 1 are children, the elderly and the disabled.
Congress and the president should get together now -- today -- to prevent this crime, this outrage, this scandal and this moral indecency before any more of the hungry and the hurting fall of the cliff created by the politicians.
