Even though we don't like to think about it, we all have an expiration date. And most everything we're in contact with does too. Our computers will only give us so many good years before they begin to malfunction; and the meat we buy at the grocery store has just a few days of peak freshness. It makes sense; it's all part of the natural life cycle.
But some food items, it turns out, can last forever. These vampires of the food world are good to have on hand -- and to buy in bulk -- because they will never spoil, never lose quality and will always be there when you need them. So feel free to cook up that bag of rice you found lodged behind your kitchen cabinet (with a purchase date of 1982), it's just as good for you as the day you bought it.
