Is Fox News' Ratings Dominance Over? Observers Say No (VIDEO)

WATCH: Is Fox News' Dominance In Ratings Over?

What does Fox News' recent slip in the ratings mean for the network? Not much, according to most observers.

Fox News, the perennial number one cable news channel, didn't do as well as usual in January. The network had its worst prime time ratings in the coveted 25-54 demographic since August 2001, and its lowest total day ratings since June 2008.

When asked if "the era of Fox dominance is over," though, NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik dismissed the idea.

"It doesn’t look like that at the moment," Folkenflik told HuffPost Live host Ahmed Shihab-Eldin Friday. He attributed the ratings dip to the sad state of Republican politics, saying, "It's been a tough stretch for Fox in the sense that it’s been a tough stretch for conservatives."

Folkenflik praised what he called the network's ability "to win the largest niche possible" and keep those viewers tuned in. Likewise, former CNN president Jon Klein called Fox News' CEO Roger Ailes a "ferocious competitor," and said that it would be wrong "to write off Fox News," which continues to "attract a lot of viewers."
