Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) claimed on Tuesday that President Barack Obama is hoping for a government shutdown in order to score political points and "stick it" to Republicans.
"I believe the president wants us to shut it down," Wolf said at the Leesburg Daybreak Rotary Club, according to the Loudoun Times-Mirror. "I think he'll literally come at us."
Wolf added that he believes a government shutdown is a bad idea because it would be blamed on Republicans.
"That's the battle that's going on in my party," he said. "There are some that are saying, 'Shut it down! ... If we shut the government down, who's going to fund the [Veterans Affairs] hospital? Who's going to fund the veteran who doesn't have a leg? Who's going to fund the FBI who's working on a counter-terrorism case? Who's going to fund cancer research?"
Jim DeMint, president of the conservative Heritage Foundation and a former Republican senator from South Carolina, has also tried to pin the threat of a government shutdown on Obama.
"If Obama would not accept a funding bill for the government that fully funds the government but didn't have his failed law in it, then he would be shutting down the government," DeMint said on Fox News Sunday, referring to Republican efforts to cut off money for Obamacare.
In recent weeks, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has been heading an effort to essentially shut down the federal government unless Obamacare is effectively canceled. He wants Republicans to refuse to pass a continuing resolution to keep the federal government open if that resolution includes funding to implement health care reform.
