These Aren't Your Mom's French Manicures

We never thought the day would come when we'd walk into the nail salon and request a French manicure. But we're reconsidering what many refer to as the "ugly" '90s trend, thanks to the all the cool designs we saw at New York Fashion Week.

Backstage at Tibi, Cushnie et Ochs, Monique Lhuillier and Nicholas K, manicurists painted fancy and funky tips onto models' nails. Morgan Taylor lead artist Gina Edwards best described this modern twist as "Not Your Mother's French Mani," as the new look involves bold polish colors, foils and brushes to remix the classic thick, white tip.

From V-shaped nails in rich burgundy hues to monochromatic manis with a blank center strip, there are plenty of ways to rock a French manicure. Not to mention, we learned a finger-rolling trick from celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann that makes recreating these contemporary designs super easy.

To get the look: Apply Christian Louboutin Nail Colour in La Favorita (a soft nude shade) as a base, then create a deep "V" at the tip of nail with Sevillana (a rich chocolate brown).

To get the look: Using Morgan Taylor's Simply Irresistible (a sheer pink) as a base, follow by adding a thin tip in Later Alligator (a Kelly green). Seal the manicure with Make It Last, a long-wearing top coat.

To get the look: Apply a coat of JINSoon Tulle to filed and clean nails. Next, use a striping brush to draw two parallel lines in the center of the nail with the color of your choice. (The model here is wearing JINSoon Doux, a powder pink color.) You want to leave the center strip blank. Then draw a diagonal line from each line towards the edge of the nail. Once you have the outline of the shapes, fill them in. Finish with JINSoon Top Gloss.

To get the look: Apply Smith & Cult Basis of Everything Base Coat. Next, add two coats of Smith & Cult Nailed Lacquer in Ghost Edit. Give the tips of each nail glamour by gently placing specs of gold leafing on top or use Bridge and Tunnel for a similar gleaming effect. Finish with Above It All Top Coat.
