"French Spiderman" Alain Robert Climbs NYT Building With Global Warming Banner

A man holding a bright green banner has ascended the north face of The New York Times's building, climbing about 10 stories while the police and security officials cordoned off the sidewalk on West 41st Street. He was still on the building as of 11:50 a.m. The words on the banner were illegible from the sidewalk, but from an office window on the ninth floor the slogan on the banner read: "Global warming kills more people than 9/11 every week." His T-shirt carried the address of a Web site: thesolutionissimple.org.

The man, who had long brown hair, appeared to be Alain Robert, a stunt man famous for scaling structures like the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the the Eiffel Tower and Montparnasse Tower in Paris. He wore a T-shirt with Mr. Robert's name and Web site, and he looked like images of Mr. Robert that have been published widely in the press.
