FriendsWithYou's 'Inner Space': Art After Basel

There's Art After Basel

The weeks after Art Basel Miami Basel have that deafening hum that rings in your ear after a full night of bass-heavy clubbing. The New York hipster crowds and Palm Beach nouveau riche might be gone, but there's plenty of art left to be seen.

One of the highlights of this year's festivities is FriendsWithYou's exhibit at their gallery/store in the Design District. As it sits a bit off-the-Basel-path, you may have missed it when it opened on November 29. But "Inner Space, the Secrets of the Unknown" is open until January 28 and is worth an afternoon visit.

FriendsWithYou is the fine art collective of Samuel Borkson and Arturo "Tury" Sandoval, a duo that encapsulates Miami's fun, playful vibe. They've even copyrighted the phrase "Magic, Luck, and Friendship," a vibe that runs through all their installations, toys, and graphic design. Their adorable, blow-up creatures in "Rainbow City" have adorned a Toronto park, New York's High Line, and a vacant lot for last year's Art Basel Miami Beach.

For "Inner Space," FriendsWithYou displays a mix of bright wooden sculptures, kawaii metal beings, and their classic inflatable creatures. Before you even enter the exhibit, "The Phantom" greets you overhead in the building's atrium.
