Discovery's "Frozen Planet" series has captivated us with its unbelievable facts, wildlife stories that range from the sweet to the savage, and beautiful sweeping shots of life in the Earth's polar regions throughout every season.
But we've been watching and wondering, "How did they do that?" quite a bit. Cameras catching beluga whales "exfoliating" on the ocean's rocky floor; hibernating under a ton of snow with a mama polar bear as she gives birth to her twins; riding the tidal wave created by a perfectly choreographed pod of whales trying to get their prey -- it's fascinating. That's why this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the "making of" Discovery's "Frozen Planet" series is so cool.
"Frozen Planet: Making Of" (Sun., Apr. 8, 8 p.m. ET on Discovery) will show us some of the more impossible shots the crews caught on tape, and how they pulled it off. Travelling thousands of miles, toting their gear every step of the way, they worked under a lot of extreme pressures, including weather, the exciting but unknown new technologies they were using and, of course, the personalities of the wild animals they were there to capture, up close and personal.
In our exclusive sneak peek, we see how they got such great footage of orcas, landing their helicopter on unsteady ground just in time to set up their cameras and shoot. Then, the real surprise comes when they take the cameras underwater -- watch the clip above to see why narrator Alec Baldwin says the orcas are "like giant, snorting periscopes."
