An Easter egg is coming.
(Warning: spoilers!)
Season 2 of "The Leftovers" is starting out crazy. Justin Theroux, aka Kevin Garvey, and his TV family move into a weird new town where people supposedly haven't disappeared (supposedly), the actor who plays Eddie Winslow on "Family Matters" got his house burned down (Just wait until his police dad Carl hears about this) and there's a new character named John Murphy who invites the Garveys over for his birthday and tells them he was put in jail for attempted murder because he "didn't try hard enough."
(Ladies and gentlemen, we have a complete baller.)
And that's not even the best part of the Season 2 premiere. It appears there was also one big Easter egg for another popular HBO show.
Right after Murphy reveals he was in jail, his daughter Evie drops his birthday cake on the ground and goes into a mysterious trance. Things are intense. Then Theroux's TV boo Nora Durst finally breaks the tension by blurting out, "The pie," thinking the pie the Murphys brought them earlier could replace the cake.
And all that might remind you of another famous scene ...
Yup. The moment is almost identical to when Margaery breaks the tension between Tyrion and Joffrey at the latter's wedding feast on "Game of Thrones" by also blurting out, "The pie!"
What's more, Joffrey ends up dying in that episode after washing the pie down with poisoned wine, and Murphy had suspicions the pie in "Leftovers" was actually poisoned. (That's the whole reason he gave it to the Garveys in the first place.)
Wowwwww! Well played, HBO. King Joffrey would be pleased.
